The Art of the Chainsaw

I've recently stumbled upon a local artist Brett McLain in Newton, NJ who brings chainsaw art to another level in my opinion. He appears to have a flair for playful and whimsical designs which is a favorite of mine. If you have the opportunity to visit his shop or the website I think you'll enjoy his work. I recently purchased a bear carving from him for the path to my home.

The "Paperman"

This is another cool breakthrough from John Lassiter, a CGI technique enabling a hand drawn effect...combining tech and a good story line to create a great short animation. Update 2.25.13: the link I originally posted was closed after this film won an Oscar for Best Animated Short, above is a new link which unfortunately has some advertising, its worth the wait, enjoy. Tip: use the full screen icon to the bottom right of the player for best viewing.

This is a screen shot from the 1950 sci-fi movie Rocketship X-M. Astronauts (Lloyd Bridges, Osa Massen, John Emery, Noah Beery, Jr., and Hugh O'Brien) blast off to explore the moon, but because of a malfunction, they end up on Mars instead. When on Mars, they explore and discover a ruined city of a past civilization.

If you visit the archive there are many vintage TV commercials, music, texts, cartoons, etc., look around and have fun exploring.

Bob Staake's Old School Illustration Technique

You may recognize Bob Staake's illustrations from various children's books and other publications. He creates most of his elements from primitive shapes. I thought this was a very interesting albeit old school digital method of illustrating with Photoshop 3; Enjoy.

Spotted this in a Seth Godin email, 100,000 plus vintage advertising images from the 1870's to 2000. Great reference for design teachers, but should be interesting to all. www.vintageadbrowser.com/ Doing a search for labels the search engine allows for search by color as well. There is also a sister site for Covers, for example: "Twilight Zone" www.coverbrowser.com
