Watch out for Dark Patterns Online

12/1/2014

On Cyber Monday or anytime you are ordering something online be wary of Dark Patterns, these are design patterns weaved within a site that are purposefully designed to scam the user...some are obvious while others subtle. For example, I ordered something from Zazzle.com last year and found out their default was to make me member at a price of $9.99/annual set to auto renew every year unless I went out of my way to opt out, this is a deceptive practice that some online companies use to trick users to paying unwanted fees or services. See the video below for other "evil" practices...

PictureWinner Best in Show 2014
Long time friend Marge Paradise casually mentioned to me she won Best in Show at the PSNJ Ninth Annual Members Exhibit, Livingston gallery. I think that's great news and an opportunity to share her new portfolio at paradisestudio.weebly.com for others to enjoy. Nice work and kudos to Marge!

The Art of the Chainsaw

I've recently stumbled upon a local artist Brett McLain in Newton, NJ who brings chainsaw art to another level in my opinion. He appears to have a flair for playful and whimsical designs which is a favorite of mine. If you have the opportunity to visit his shop or the website I think you'll enjoy his work. I recently purchased a bear carving from him for the path to my home.
